Star Wars: The Shadow Peril
Chat-Based Gaming Conventions

KotOR 3 will be run using a combination of G+ Hangout and Gmail chat. We’ve seen that the voice chat for out-of-character discussions speeds up rules questions and combat, while using text chat for in-character actions and conversations keeps a good level of immersion (as well as a log of the evening’s play).
I’ll share “boxed text” in the chat window, and use a § symbol to let you know when I’m done.
GM: You follow Ben Kenobi into the smoke-filled cantina. The murky, moldy den is filled with a startling array of weird and exotic alien creatures and monsters at the long metallic bar. At first the sight is horrifying. One-eyed, thousand-eyed, slimy, furry, scaly, tentacled, and clawed creatures huddle over drinks.
GM: Ben moves to an empty spot at the bar near a group of repulsive but human scum. A huge, rough-looking Bartender stops you.§
Describe your actions in the third person.
Han: Without looking away from Greedo, Han reaches down and quietly releases the strap holding his trusty DL-44 in its holster.
Leia: Leia crosses the hall to the smoking hole she just blasted in the wall. “Into the garbage chute, flyboy!” she yells, then dives through the narrow opening.
Luke: Luke isn’t listening to Ben any more. He jumps into his landspeeder and tears away from the site of the massacre, racing back toward the Lars homestead.
Any dialog goes in “quotes.” If it isn’t obvious who is speaking, or to whom, or in which language, then please make it clear.
Leia: “The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers.” She laces her words with the aristocratic accent she reserves for speaking to nobles.
Han: (under his breath) “This is not going to work.”
Greedo: (in Huttese) “Jabba’s through with you. He has no time for smugglers who drop their shipments at the first sign of an Imperial cruiser.”
GM: C-3P0 (on the comlink): “We’ve had some problems.”
Finally, if you want to include out-of-character business in the chat window, please do so in (parentheses).
Luke: Luke orders a drink.
GM: (I’d like to compel your trouble aspect here. You have Inexperienced aspect and are in a “wretched hive of scum and villainy” situation, so it makes sense that, unfortunately, belligerent aliens would happen to you. Damn your luck.)
Luke: (sounds good)
GM: (+1 Fate point to Luke) A large, walrus-faced alien bumps into Luke and starts bellowing at him. His little, ugly friend announces: “He doesn’t like you.”
